The place of honor it now holds in the life of the Church is due to its faithful use at the shrine of the Holy House at Loreto,  It was definitively approved by Pope Sixtus V in 1587, and all other suppressed for public use. additions by several Popes indicated.  interpretation by Blessed Pius IX: 'God enriched her so wonderfully from the treasury of His divinity, far beyond all angels and saints with the abundance of all heavenly gifts, that she...should show forth such fullness of innocence and holiness, than which a greater under God is unthinkable and which, beside God, no one can even conceive in thought.'

    The Black Madonna (Our Lady of Czestochowa) — Revered icon housed at a monastery in Poland. Poland's national Marian shrine, associated with a legend that St. Luke painted it on a table build by Jesus.
    Our Lady of Perpetual Help — Famous 15th century Icon showing Mary and Jesus attended by archangels Michael and Gabriel. It is under the special care of the Redemptorist order.
    Our Lady of Guadalupe — Refers to an image Mary left on the cloak of Juan Diego. Our Lady called herself coatlaxopeuh, which means "the one who crushes the serpent." The word is pronounced "quat-la-supe," from which is derived the English version of "Guadalupe."
    Our Lady of Mt. Carmel — This is Mary of the brown scapular. The scapular comes to us through the vision of St. Simon Stock. Many miracles have been attributed to the scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
    Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal — Mary's appearances to Catherine Laboure in 1830 marked the beginning of modern Marian apparitions. Mary gave Sr. Catherine the design for this medal. The words on the medal prompted clarification on the Immaculate Conception, which became dogma in 1854.
    Mother of Mercy Saint Odo, a 10th century abbot, is believed to be the first to call Mary by this name. In the 11th century, this title was incorporated into the prayer Salve Regina.
    Our Lady of Aparecida — Clay statue found by fishermen, considered to be the patron of Brazil. The largest Marian shrine in South America was built in her honor.
    Mother of Good Counsel — Title of a painting said to be miraculous, found in a thirteenth century Augustinian church at Genazzano, Italy
    Our Lady of Good Success — Title of Several different Marian statues, one in Quito Ecuador, and one in Madrid Spain.
    Our Lady of Manaoag — Ivory statue of the Virgin that was brought to the Philippines from Mexico in the early 17th century. The largest Marian shrine in the Philippines is dedicated to her.
    Virgin of the Rocks — This is the name of two paintings of the Virgin Mary by Leonardo da Vinci.
    Our Lady of Peace — Name of a 16th century statue of Mary that adorned a Capuchin monastery in Paris for 200 years until the monastery was dissolved during the French Revolution. Capuchins are associated with the Feast of Our Lady of Peace.

Charles Williams, a first encounter

Charles Walter Stansby Williams (1886–1945) was an author and intellectual, born in Londen on September 20th 1886, went to st Albans school and the University College in Londen. In 1908, Oxford University Press hired him as a literary adviser. Until his death on May 15th 1945 in Oxford (of which a later poetry professor said: “ This was a general disaster, like an air raid ... The war with Germany was over. Charles Williams was dead. And suddenly Oxford was not the same again .”) he remained employed there and increasingly became a valued and beloved member of staff. In 1917 he married Florence (‘ Michal ’) and they got a son Michael. Williams was, as an anglo-catholic, a dedicated member of the anglican church with a refreshing tolerance for the scepticism of others as well as the most original lay theologian of the 20th century. The 'Terrible' Truth

The brilliant author and lay-theologian Charles Williams ( CW , see another Blogpost ) stated: "Most people are, effectively, dualists." It is very natural to look at the world in terms of opposites: male / female, light / dark, we / them, good / bad, pleasant / painful. We certainly need to make distinctions in order to make the world intelligible. And we definitely need to have preferences in order to make decisions, to live our lives. One preference we naturally share for sure is that we abhor pain (and emotional probably even more than physical). Pain also makes us feel that the world was not meant that way. As the great apologist G.K. Chesterton remarked: "Certain new theologians dispute original sin, which is the only part of Christian theology which can really be proved." Then pain must somehow be a punishment, if not for our personal faults then for those of our anchestors, right? Thus pain is to make us suffer for some bad act and happines...
